Lessons from The Black-Eyed Susan

September 8, 2016 by Shannon Leave a Comment

The Black-Eyed Susans are dying. They’ve spent themselves.

They are in preparation for a new season. One where they’ll lie still and quiet under the heavy blanket of snow this winter. But they’ll be back next Spring, inching back out of the ground when it’s safe – they’ll come forth in greater number and strength.

Come summer they’re sure to burst forth again, filling the long side of our house with life. This is the way of things. Sure as sure.

I always take a picture of them in their glory. Right about July. They make me smile there – tall and proud with their vibrant yellow petals and their big black center.

But, in this season of my own soul-tending, I have been struck afresh by their beauty in a different way. I am marveling at them right now, as they lay dying. There is another kind of beauty in them at this stage. It’s a stark kind of beauty. One that comes after the glory.

Because they have spent themselves for something wonderful.

They are depleted and exhausted by their summer effort. Their proud stems are bending over and most of their petals have dropped. A few hang on… reminders of the glory.

There is something profoundly beautiful about that dying. Something that stirs in my soul as I contemplate the shriveled leaves and the scattered petals.

So strong is our longing for the glory, that sometimes I think we miss the beauty of this. Jesus didn’t. He knew that the dying had its own kind of splendor. In speaking of His own pending death, He said this: “I tell you the truth, unless a kernel of wheat falls to the ground and dies, it remains only a single seed. But if it dies, it produces many seeds.”

If we’re honest with ourselves, we’ll admit that we’re actually not so sure about this. In his short piece on repentance, William Willimon said it this way: “Whatever the Gospel means, we tell ourselves, it could not mean death. Love, divine or human, could never exact something so costly.”

Could it really mean that Jesus bids me come and die? And that there is really some beauty in that? A glory of its own?

In the agony of having my petals stripped clean by a strong-willed child or a selfish friend, there is beauty? When I pour myself out for my kids and I have nothing left but shriveled leaves and a blackened nub? When I am bent low by the harsh winds of this world and insensitive demands of others? When no one even notices me? Beauty? There?

Jesus says yes. There is. Will we believe Him? Will we come and die,  laying our own desires aside? Spending our days serving others? Giving instead of buying? Going instead of relaxing? Sacrificing instead of indulging? Submitting instead of demanding?

And after we have been spent, what then? Will we yield to Winter and wait for Spring to call forth new life from the very ground where the spent petals lay?

Nature echoes it. The Black-Eyed Susans attest to this truth. Spend yourself and see, they say.

Will you?

These Women Tho. Seriously.

There are moments in time that just sort of grab you and you know you’ll never forget them. I had one of those moments last Monday evening. I was in a meeting with the 30-or-so women from our church who will be leading the tables at our women’s Bible study on Monday nights this Fall.img_4711

I can’t even begin to tell you how much I love this group of women. Some of them are my dearest friends. Some of them I’m only just getting to know. All of them… I just adore their hearts. They are a collection of women from various walks and seasons of life. Beautiful in their differences. But there is one thing that brings them together – a  heart to help other women know God better through studying His Word.

They’re not all Biblical scholars. None of them are getting paid or receiving awards for their service. They’re not all extroverts who just feed on group time.

They’re just faithful women who are committed to pouring over their own Bibles and want to help other women do that same thing. They want to create a safe place for asking questions or talking about conviction and lifechange. They want to wrestle a bit with the content of these words from God. Why? So that we can all know the heart of our Lord just a little bit better.

I’ll teach from up front and share the things God lays on my heart from our study. I’ll speak out over 200 or so women with Spirit-filled passion and hope that something connects at a heart level. But, these women will sit at their tables and talk nitty-gritty. They’ll take the words from the pages of God’s Holy Bible and rub them up against real lives in more personal ways. They’ll wade into the muck of life with their little table of women in ways that I can’t from up front.

This is why I adore them. Why I love them so much.

But, can I tell you about the moment that really grabbed me from our time together last Monday? It was listening to them pray. Hearing them go before the Lord and ask Him for very specific things. For tender, teachable hearts. For God’s grace as we talk about hard truths. For deep connection among women at the tables. For God’s glory and renown in our community.

It was so powerful for me to sit back and listen to their requests.

Because they know that if God’s not in it, doing His thing, it will be a waste of all our time. We can have the most polished and well-prepared study the world has ever seen. Registration can run tight. Our numbers can be high. We can welcome newcomers like a boss. And have a seat for every single woman who wants to come. I can teach with fervor. But, if it’s all about US and what WE can do, it will all be for naught.

If God is in it though… If He does what only He can do… well, that’s a whole ‘nother thing entirely.

Keeping My Eyes Open to God at Work {Costa Rica and Beyond}

December 28, 2015 by Shannon Leave a Comment

5114671I was a sophomore in college when God first gave me a glimpse of living for more than just my little life.  Up until then, my faith was mostly about me. That, by the way, was the same summer I met Rick, who was getting the same glimpse into God’s bigger agenda. Since that fated summer in 1990, we haven’t looked back. Ours has been an adventure of trying to keep our eyes open to God’s work around us and then getting on board with what He is doing to advance His kingdom in a lost world.

When we left the staff of CRU (after 15 years) and Rick became a pastor, I wasn’t exactly sure what that would look like for me. But, as always, God knew. My ministry morphed from reaching out to and mentoring college women to a ministry of coming alongside Rick, reaching out to moms in our kids’ schools, being hospitable to international students attending Kent State, blogging, mentoring my own daughter, pouring into the younger women at our church and teaching the Bible to women – primarily at our church but also at conferences here and there. In fact, earlier this season, I spoke at a Christmas event for a church on Cleveland’s west side and got to see 30 or so women trust Christ! I have loved this new phase of life and ministry in ways I didn’t expect.

Now I have an opportunity to be part of team that is going to Costa Rica in February. Our church partners with an orphanage there (Roblealto Child Care Association in San Jose) that is doing powerful things in that tiny country. We love their philosophy of ministry, their approach to their people, and their heart for Jesus. While the orphanage is now mostly run by nationals, they still use outside teams to come in throughout the year for various projects. Our team will get to be a part of that legacy. During the days, I’ll be part of a construction team to help with any rebuilding projects the orphanage needs. During the evenings, I’ll get to spend time with the kids who call Roblealto home (for the time being). In fact, Rick and I support two children at the orphanage and can’t wait to meet them!

1409868174This trip is part of a long-standing relationship between our church and Roblealto. We are happy to partner with the ministry there in many ways, whether by sending money, encouragement and prayer from afar or by supplying manpower, supplies, and refreshment in person to bless the staff who live and work there day-in and day-out.

I would love to take this chance to serve, but I can’t do it without you. I need my friends and family to surround me in two ways: first, by praying for my team and our ministry to these precious young people; and second, by giving part of your resources so that I can go. As always, no pressure. I’m trusting the Lord to raise the money if He wants me there. I’m just asking you to ask Him if you should be a part of His provision.

If you would like to support this trip financially, you can give online here. If funds are received which exceed my personal expenses, the extra will be donated directly to Roblealto.

And, if you want to join me by praying, just make sure you’re subscribed to the blog via email (see the sidebar to the right). I’ll post updates right here.
